In your article , "Beating Specialist Baker," you wrote:

"If the U.S. military treats one of its own soldiers this way-allowing him to be battered, then lying to cover it up-then imagine what happens to Afghans and Iraqis. President Bush attributed the problems uncovered at Abu Ghraib to "a few American troops who dishonored our country. Mr. Bush, the problems go deeper than a few bad apples."

Indeed the problems do go deeper than a few bad apples.  It is awful what happens to Afghans and Iraqis.  But you have no idea what happens to Americans, do you?  The prison system in America is as bad if not worse than your article describes and Mr. Bush - as governor of Texas - has been repeatedly informed.  But guess what?  The officers and wardens across this country lie to cover up the abuse and the press tells us repeatedly that it doesn't see a story when there is horrible abuse to American prisoners by American citizens on American soil.

Now and then, we see a news article in a local newspaper depicting the "claims" of abuse that are never taken seriously - even when a prisoner dies.  But never once has the mainstream news media checked into the THOUSANDS of claims across the country to report what really goes on behind the concrete walls out of public view.  The public is paying for this abuse and the public doesn't even know - or seem to care - about American prisoners being treated as bad or worse than Afghan and Iraqi prisoners.  In fact, as soon as the topic gets close to being exposed, propaganda to belie this starts being spread by email to the ignorant and thought-less general public who think the email is "funny" and ergo passes it around to co-workers and the like who aren't paying attention to the truth anyway.  Below is a sample of propaganda that gets passed around in an effort to sidetrack - to STOP THE TRUTH about the abuse to American prisoners by American citizens on American soil from being exposed!  We all know how awful the 9-11 attack was.  We don't all know the truth of who was responsible and that has nothing at all - nothing whatsoever - to do with the abuse to American prisoners here in this country.

"The degree of civilization in a society can be judged by entering the prisons"  Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The House of the Dead. -- quoted by, Chief Justice Rhenquist.

The American society is not civilized as long as it thinks that abusing its own prisoners is either deserved or a joke.  They are hypocrites if they think that what happened to Iraqi prisoners was terrible, while believing that doing the same thing to American prisoners is okay.

A Message from the ghost of General Patton....

OK you whining, panty-waisted, pathetic Maggots, it's time for a little refresher course on exactly why we Americans occasionally have
to fight wars.

See if you can tear yourself away from your "reality" TV and Starbucks for a minute, pull your head out of your flabby ass - and

THIS is not "torture" or an "atrocity." This is the kind of thing frat boys, sorority girls, and academy cadets do to newcomers.

A little fun at someone else's expense. Certainly no reason to wring your hands or get your panties in a wad. Got that Kennedy?

THIS IS an atrocity!

So Was This!!!

Islam a peaceful religion???

As we speak Millions of these sons-of-bitches are plotting to destroy our country and our way of life any way they can. Some of them are here among us now.

They don't want to convert you and don't want to rule you.

You are a vile infestation of Allah's paradise.

They don't give a shit how "progressive" you are, how peace-loving you are, or how much you sympathize with their cause.

They want you dead, and think it is God's will for them to do it. And you think Bush and Ashcroft are your worst enemies?

John Kerry thinks if he gives them a hug or listens to them, they'll like us...and you agree?

You dumb ass!

If they manage to get their hands on a nuke, chemical agents, or even some anthrax - you will wish to God we had hunted them down and killed THEM while we had the chance.

Stop bitchin' about your Goddamn Health Care, Social Security, Gas prices, and your measly 6% unemployment rate...and start worrying about you, your family's, and your friends' asses.

How many more Americans must be beheaded before you stop blaming Bush for all your troubles - and grow some balls for a change.

You've fallen asleep AGAIN Maggots!

And you may not get another chance!

NOW GET OFF YOUR SORRY ASS - and pass this on to any and every person you give-a-damn about...if you ever gave a damn about anything.

==end propaganda example==

So what is wrong with this picture?  Passing around propaganda designed to inflame so as to ignore the fact - or forget - that American
prisoners are being terribly abused in American prisons doesn't make the abuse go away.

Is the prison industrial complex such big business that it's "okay" to abuse American prisoners, to make sure the story stays quiet, to keep American prisoners angry so that they are more likely to return through the infamous revolving door of the prison industrial complex, to maintain the industry's revenue?  This is so, so sick!!!!  People who belong to the American society are supposed to be better than this.  Instead, it IS the American way to abuse others, even their own.

"If you treat prisoners well, they will be less angry, less inclined to violence inside prison, less likely to provoke violent actions by guards, less likely to have reason to file brutality lawsuits that cost taxpayers a bundle and waste administrators' time. And most important, well treated prisoners will be less likely to leave prison angrier, more vicious and more inclined to criminal behavior than when they went in." --- Frank Wood, Former Commissioner of Corrections, Minnesota

But treating prisoners like human beings isn't good for bottom-line revenues because when they get out, they won't go back.

Criminals are to be sent to prison AS punishment, not FOR punishment.  That was the initial idea of our penal system until it was corrupted by people who saw $$$ in the prison industry.  The commodity?  Human beings.  How sick is that???

Thank you for writing the story about Beating Specialist Baker.  May you and your colleagues search and investigate the truth about how American prisoners are brutally mistreated here in the United States of America.  May the code of silence end now and may the abusers pay for their crimes against humanity.  In the 21st century it is time for integrity in all endeavors to be first on the agenda.
