COVINGTON, Ky. - A former deputy jailer pleaded guilty to assaulting an inmate who died of his injuries nearly a month later.

Robert Raymond Price, 36, admitted to the March 17, 2002, beating in a court appearance Friday. In a soft voice, Price told U.S. District Judge David Bunning that he struck the inmate, Chad Boggess of Charleston, W.Va., several times with a baton. Boggess died April 11.

Bunning called Price's actions "horrendous" and set sentencing for May 21. Price, who remains free on bond, could be sentenced to up to 6 1/2 years in prison.

Boggess, 27, was in the Boyd County Detention Center on a fugitive warrant in connection with an alleged home robbery in Charleston.

Coroner Philip Neal ruled Boggess' death a homicide, concluding he was placed face down on the floor with his hands shackled behind him, causing strangulation. Blunt force injuries to the head also contributed to the death, Neal said.

Two other former deputy jailers were also accused in the beating, but a federal grand jury indicted only Price.

Boggess' father, Thadeous Boggess, said he wants murder charges brought.

"They have to do the right thing," he said. "Too many eyes are on them. I'm going to stay on this until somebody does their job."

County prosecutor Stewart Schneider said he may present the case to a state grand jury.
